The San Antonio Spurs started out as the Dallas Chaparrals of the original version of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967. After missing the playoffs for the first time in their existence in the 1972-73 season, the team was put up for sale.
The team was acquired by a group of 36 San Antonio business men, including Red McCombs. The team was relocated to San Antonio and renamed the San Antonio Gunslingers. However, before they even played a game the name was changed to Spurs. The Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and New York Nets moved to the NBA for the 1976-77 season. In their first NBA season the Spurs showed their depth and talent by winning 44 games and making the 1977 NBA Playoffs.
